This is not to say that kids shouldn’t be allowed to be carefree, because they absolutely should, and we should find joy in the safety of acceptance. But the LGBTQ+ history is as essential to understanding society and ourselves as any other history, and it continues to be erased and silenced. Even now, the current American president has declined to recognize June as Pride Month, as it has been in the past. Queer people still face a unique threat of violence, with the massacre at Pulse nightclub still looming in recent history, and hate-related homocides increasing by 82% from 2016 to 2017. These numbers only increase when we talk about queer people of color and transgender people. When we know this to be true, how can we ignore the significance of queer history? How can we appreciate what we have without knowing where we came from? The truth is, we’re still celebrating Pride in June, whether 45 likes it or not. And part of Pride is carrying the weight of the queer past, knowing that LGBTQ+ folks have fought to find joy and love over the years and how special and exciting it is that we can find joy and love today. If you’re interested in learning more about queer history, here’s a good place to start. This is by no means a comprehensive list of books, as the history of LGBTQ+ people is intrinsically interwoven with, well, everythingâ€"but feeling connected to our past helps us connect to each other now. We celebrate not only the freedom we have found, but the work it took to get there. GENERAL A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski A Queer History of the United States  is more than a who’s who of queer history: it is a book that radically challenges how we understand American history. The Reward of Souls There are three books in Dante’s The Divine Comedy to illustrate the three worlds. They are Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Throughout all three books of The Divine Comedy, Poetic Justice can be found easily: all souls get what they deserved. In Dante’s description, Inferno has a shape of a funnel with nine circles. The greater the sin, the lower someone is the greater penalty they get after they die. Poetic Justice can be found in the Inferno everywhere. The souls in the Inferno have to be punished because what they have done and what kinds of sins they have. Purgatory is like a mountain and is devided by seven terraces. Each of the terraces represents a sin, and same as in the Inferno, they souls in the Purgatory will suffer what they need to suffer. The difference is Purgatory is for purification, but not for punishment. That is why the souls can go to higher terraces, their sins have washed off as they stay in there. As long as they souls reach the top of the moun tain (Purgatory), they can go to Paradise. There are seven spheres in Paradise. The souls in the higher sphere are nobler. Dante the Pilgrim and his teacher Virgil are the main characthers in both Inferno and Purgatory. However at the end of Purgatory and the whole Paradise, Beatrice appears to be the guide of the Pilgrim instead of Virgil. In the city of ancient Rome, only the wealthy could afford to live in a domus—in this case, house, like a mansion. For most,  Rome apartments—or the back rooms of their ground floor shops—were the affordable alternative, making Rome the first urban, apartment-based society. The Rome apartments were often in buildings called insulae (sg. insula,  literally, island). Some Rome apartments may have been in buildings 7-8 stories high. Lodging houses were diversoria, where residents (hospites or diversitores) lived in cellae rooms. Also Known As:  Cenacula, Insulae, Aediculae (Frier) Roman Apartment Terminology Generally, insula is treated as a synonym for a Roman apartment building, although sometimes it can refer to the Rome apartments themselves or tabernae (shops), etc. The individual apartments in the insula were called cenacula (sg. cenaculum) at least in Imperial records known as the Regionaries. Why section 24 of the charter was included Section 24 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms has two subsections. Subsection 1 denotes that anybody, whose rights have been infringed upon, has the privilege of protesting against the identified breaches at a competent court of jurisdiction. Furthermore, the court will have the power and capability of providing appropriate remedies, in the circumstances or based on the issue at hand (Rgimbald Newman, 2013). This is a section that is important because it grants a competent court of jurisdiction the power of a judicial review. This means that the courts have the capability of striking down any policy enacted by the Federal and the Provincial governments, which may result to the breach of an individuals rights and freedoms, in accordance to the Charter and the Bill of Rights (Greene, 2014). In fact, before the enactment of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, provincial leaders were opposed to it, because of the belief that the courts may be used to check their activities and policies they seek to implement (Fudge Jensen, 2016). A good example where section 24 (1) has been used to check the policies of a provincial government; is, Doucet-Boudreu v Nova Scotia, where the court, by applying section 24 ruled that the delay in building school that teach French language, was a breach of section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Mendes Beaulac, 2013). From this ruling, it is possible to denote that section 24 was intended to help the courts to check the excesses of the government, and prevent the passage and implementation of policies that are harmful to people. Additionally, section 24 (2) was introduced for purposes of preventing the admission and use of evidence that has been illegally obtained. This is because the courts will refuse to use the evidence under consideration if it will negatively affect the administration of justice. Moreover, the Ontario Review Board has been monitoring his case every year, and in 2006, Mr. Conway instituted a legal case, claiming that there was a breach on his Charter rights (Heritage, 2013). The rights breached are under section 2, 7, 8. 9 and 15. Therefore, he was seeking the protection of the Ontario Review Board under section 24 (1) of the Charter. While claiming protection from the board, Mr. Conway argued that his rights were violated because of the poor living condition he was subjected to, environmental pollution and poor treatment. Furthermore, he was threatened by his handlers that they would use physical and chemical methods to restrain him (David, 2014). In making their ruling, the Ontario Review Board denoted that it did not have any jurisdiction to rule on aspects touching on the charter. This was a decision that was upheld at the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2008. However, Mr. Conway appealed the decision at the Supreme Court of Canada. Issue before the Court Whether the Ontario Board of Review has the jurisdiction to provide remedies under section 24 (1) of the Charter, and if it has the jurisdiction, is the appellant entitled to the remedies that he is seeking? The Law Considered in this case The Canadian Charter of Rights section 24 (1) Section 672 of the Criminal Code Decision of the Court The Supreme Court ruled that the Ontario Review Board did not have a jurisdiction to provide an absolute remedy as per s. 24(1) of the act. The Reasoning of the Court In coming up with a decision, the court relied on the following tests, If an administrative tribunal can be classified as a court of competent jurisdiction, and if it has the authority to decide questions of law, and it is not excluded from the charter. If the administrative authority has the power to grant the remedy that is being sought. In applying these tests to the case, the Supreme Court denoted that the ORB is a court of competent jurisdiction as per section 672 of the Criminal Code (Cornell, 2015). However, the ORB does not have the power to provide an absolute remedy in circumstances where the person may be a danger to the safety of the public. In determining whether the ORB has the power to give out the remedy being sought, the Supreme Court applied the test identified in Mill v The Queen. The Courts Interpretation of the Section of the Charter In interpreting section 24 (1) of the charter, the Supreme Court ruled that a court has competent jurisdiction over an issue, if it has jurisdiction over the parties, remedy sought and subject matter that is within the court. 3: The number of times the case has been considered, distinguished and followed. R v Conway is a new common law precedent, and as such, not many courts have relied on the precedent that has been set up by the court to determine their cases. However, two notable cases that have considered the application of the precedents developed in R v Conway are R v Sazant and Dorv. Barreau du Qubec. All these cases were determined in 2012. 4 a). Wether the precedent is considered, followed or distinguished. The most recent case to use the principles established in r v Conway is Dorv.Barreau du Qubec. The court considered and distinguished the application of this law, in determining whether the administrative decisions of Barreau du Qubec were compliant with the Canadian Charter of Freedoms and Rights. It is important to denote that the case of Dore touched on the powers of administrative tribunals to grant remedies, in accordance to the charter (Collins, 2013). On this basis, the judges in the Supreme Court applied the tests developed in r v Conway to determine whether Barreau du Quebec had the power to make the administrative decisions under consideration. b). How the court interpreted the section of the charter While deliberating on this case, the Supreme Court found out that the administrative tribunals have the power to make a decision on issues that pertain to the law, and in accordance to the charter (Bickenbach, 2015). Furthermore, these administrative tribunals have the power to grant remedies, in accordance to the issue that is before their jurisdiction. However, these tribunals are only limited to making a decision based on their scope of expertise, and the decisions must be within the values of the charter. Therefore, the court denoted that the integration of the values of the charter into the administrative approach of the courts, and the recognition of the expertise of these tribunals, helps in ensuring that there is a control and appropriate use of their powers. It illustrates war through the use of the imagery of soldiers playing games . The patriotic references appear to be out of place with the historical context of that time. The author, Henry Newbolt, writes about war in this way, so that he can get his view of war across in a more defined manner. The poem has a positive air about it and is written with a fast tempo and quick rhythm, using a lot of rhymes and anaphoric phrasing. Newbolt uses short lines with very few syllables per line. The poem shows the writer to be very exact in his choice of words. We learn for example that the participants of the war are patriotic soldiers. Finally, he also uses very precise poetic techniques using grammar to control the pace. Newbolt shows war as almost a game. He does this by using certain phrases, especially Play up! Play up! Play the game! Games are used as a metaphor of what war can do and the impact of war, which he likens to a game of cricket. He illustrates this very clearly in the first paragraph. This is a very good device used in the poem Newbolts first paragraph, portrays a game of cricket and introduces us to this idea of playing the game. Also, this first paragraph introduces the player, who is to be the deciding batter on who wins or loses the game, and does everything for his captain. We know this because in the poem it says But his Captains hand on his shoulder smote, in reference to why the batter would give the game his best effort for his captain. This paves the way for the soldiers during the war to fight and be brave for their commanding officer. The tone of Newbolts poem contrasts greatly with many poems written about the First World War. He has a more traditionalist view like that of poets who have written about previous wars as for example the poet Tennyson in his poem The Charge of the Light Brigade. Despite all the bloodshed and the death, which are illustrated in metaphoric lines like The river of death has brimmed his banks, and The sand of the desert is sodden red Newbolt still gives war the feeling of it being a game, and of there being hope, by ending with the phrase But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks: Play up! Play up! Play the game! The tone and voice of the poems is very strong and powerful and intended to beat to rhythm and pace. The lines Play up exemplify this! Play up! Play the game! These are short sharp lines with seven, eight or nine syllables per line and short words, e. g. An hour to play and the last man in, and the rhyming in the poem, eg. The sand of the desert is sodden red The Gatlings jammed and the captains dead. However, despite the fast pace, he also slows the pace before significant lines such as Play up! Play up! Play the game! by adding in colons and hyphens. Lastly, Newbolt emphasizes the patriotic fervour of the soldiers by his word use, e. g. This they all with a joyful mind, Bear through it like a torch in flame, joyful adds to the game idea and a torch of flame signifies power, strength might etc as it was commonly used in medieval battles and has been recreated especially well in the Lord of the Rings trilogy with the armies battling at night. The patriotism is emphasized by the phrases referring to her meaning England. It is also emphasized by the story-like nature of the poem. It has a beginning in which it introduces the idea of the game, a middle in which he describes the battle and incorporates the idea of a game and an end, which talks about the battle being recalled and the soldiers being heroes. It is especially the last paragraph that confirms the feeling of patriotism and commitment to the war effort. To conclude my analysis of Newbolts poem Vitai Lampada I can say that the poem, in my opinion, is a very strong, quick and powerful poem, mainly due to the rhythm and poetic techniques, and it is also a patriotic poem which illustrates the nature of war as likened on to a game.

From the English point of view and mindset, I would completely agree how they ran the government and their colonies. They wanted to maintain the dependency that the group of people whom left England had on the motherland. Any country would do the same because of the great losses you would recieve in economnics if a large portion of working people left and formed their own independant group. The colonies manufacturing their own goods would mean that England would be unable to reap tax dues, and benefit from exporting to the new world. So, of course as the English motherland, I would feel they are totally correct. Why would you want to let a large amount of people stray off from your country and cause your economics to come to a downfall. As a large power you want control of everything. It would be intolerable for the new colonies to break off from England. Also, if the colonies manufactured their own goods they would self-harvest the ingredients/items/materials to create the goods. Another loss of money for the British. If colonists created copper pots for an inn, without importing from England, this would mean that the English don't tax the product, they don't get money for the copper material, and they get no money for the pots. Although this is a rare prediciment, it is how I could best explain the situation. I totally agree with what the English were doing and even know because we overcame them to become the great country we are today, the English was doing the right thing. While England wanted the new colonies to prosper, it was not for independance, it was to support the motherland. School Assemblies – How to Plan a Successful Event! If you are given the task of picking school assemblies for your school, the job, though exciting, may have some questions that may be difficult for you to answer. How do you know which programs and how many presentations to do for your school? This is a question which comes up with any Elementary school or Middle School looking for ideas for school assemblies. Well, as famous detective Sherlock Holmes used to say: â€Å"Elementary, my dear Watson! , Elementary! † Have you talked to a twelve year old lately?Have you tried to read a bedtime story to them from a book designed to be read to a 6 year old? How did that work out for you? Not so good, huh? Kids minds change as they age. Well, that is a profound statement, right? Of course they do! And what appeals to and entertains the mind of a student in Kindergarten is radically different from what entertains a seventh grader. Even the differences from Kindergarten to 3rd g rade are profound. And yet, many schools think nothing of arranging a school assembly program for an audience of all grades, from Kindergarten through eighth grade!It always amazes me! Sure, there are presenters who can pull this off and the school may think that they had a good show. But what they do not realize is how much better the results would have been had they simply split the audience in half according to age. They might have had a great show instead! When all grades are combined, the performer of a school assembly has to become somewhat schizophrenic, addressing first the needs of one age group, then turning away from them to address the other half. The alternative is to simply present to one half and let the other half struggle.Or to shoot for the middle and ignore the extremes. Whichever way you try, it's basically a compromise that rarely please everyone. From the perspective of most school assembly performers, elementary school enrichment programs basically have three comfortably similar audience levels, with some overlap among them. The first, or Primary audience, starts with pre-K and continues up to roughly 3rd grade. The second, or Intermediate audience, can begin as early as 2nd grade and continue through 6th grade. The oldest, or Middle school, audience, begins at 4th grade and continues usually up through young adult.When audiences are split this way the presenter can change the style, vocabulary and content of the performance to best meet the needs and likes of that particular audience. It is one thing to consider whether a school assembly program is appropriate for all grades combined, but one must also ask if a particular program is indeed suited for a particular age group at all. For example, some school assemblies, when split into different performances, are quite good for all elementary school grades, but fare poorly in Middle Schools.Other school assemblies play wonderfully for Middle Schools but fly right over the heads of primary school audiences. It is wise to ascertain before scheduling a program whether or not the program is indeed appropriate for all the grades you wish to involve. Finally, one may also consider arranging different programs for different grade levels. For instance one might have a historical character for the 4th Grade, a science show for the 3rd grade, a live animal program for the 2nd grade and so on. This way everyone gets exactly what they want according to their needs.However, this supposes that cost is of little concern to you, and, sadly, we all know that cost is almost always a concern. Obviously, multiple performances will be more expensive than a single, all encompassing performance. But one should remember that â€Å"one size never really does fit all†! If you are going to spend the money to bring in a presentation it is worth making sure the experience is the best it can be. And most assembly companies and performers charge less per show for the second and third presen tations, and sometimes considerably less. It is worth checking.There is really nothing worse than having a program fail and realizing after the fact that a little extra planning and a few more dollars would have turned a sad experience into something great! Once a simple burst of entertainment to break up the year, usually in the form of a magic show or a juggler, school assemblies have blossomed into an entire industry, filled with a magnificent array of options ranging from entertainment to education and with pretty much everything in between. Knowing how to select what is right for your school can be a difficult job!It is important to decide what you are looking for, then track down the types of programs which will best serve your needs. Traditional â€Å"entertainment† shows,   while fun for the kids, have given way over the past few decades to educational programs whic h often provide a cost effective alternative to field trips. Try to schedule far in advance!While it is sometimes possible to get lucky and be able to arrange a program at the last minute, more than likely if you wait you will be disappointed. The best programs will fill in. And often, programs may only be in your area of the country at certain times. It is wise to begin your planning for the upcoming school year during the previous Spring. Regardless of what you choose, prepare to have a good time. There is nothing as rewarding a the sound of a gymnasium full of students erupting with laughter and awe from a performance you helped to bring to them!
